Cold rooms combine high humidity with low, often subzero, temperatures. Common materials such as painted steel or wood are prone to rust, decay, and mold under these conditions. Stainless steel shelving is therefore an excellent choice: it resists moisture and corrosion, is easy to clean, and meets food‑safety standards. Stainless steel does not absorb odors or food coloring, and it maximizes usable storage space while allowing flexible layout and design.
We recommend stainless steel grade 304. Its naturally forming passive film protects the metal surface from rust and corrosion, even in high‑humidity cold rooms. This passive layer is self‑healing after minor scratches, extending the service life of the shelving. Grade 304 is widely accepted as food grade and is commonly used in the food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries.
We do not recommend grade 201 despite its lower cost. Grade 201 contains less nickel and therefore offers reduced corrosion resistance, making it more susceptible to rust in cold room environments and less tolerant of temperature fluctuations.
For shelving and equipment in cold rooms, grade 304 provides superior corrosion resistance, hygiene, and long‑term value by lowering maintenance and replacement costs.
Flat (Solid) Shelves: Provide a continuous surface that supports small or unstable items and prevents small items from falling through. They are suitable for general kitchen and food‑preparation areas. However, in cold rooms, solid shelves can impede airflow because cold air cannot pass beneath the shelf.
Slatted / Tubular Shelves: Designed to enhance air circulation and are ideal for maintaining uniform temperatures in cold rooms. The open structure allows cold air to flow above and below stored items, reducing cold spots and improving product preservation. Better airflow also helps refrigeration systems operate more efficiently, saving energy and extending product shelf life.
